Carpenters: Your Work Is Excellent. Is Your Pricing?

You can eye up a stud wall to the millimetre, but pricing the job before you start it is where most carpenters lose the money they should be making. Skill on the tools doesn't automatically mean skill on the numbers.

Problem 1: Bespoke Work, Guesswork Pricing No two jobs are the same, which makes it easy to underestimate hours on detailed finish work. Quoting off a rough feel rather than a repeatable process is where margin quietly disappears.

Problem 2 : The Last 5% That Takes 20% of the Time Snagging at the very end of a job — small fixes, small adjustments — drags on for weeks, eating profit and goodwill long after the "real" work finished.

Problem 3: Waiting on Everyone Else Carpentry often sits mid-sequence on a site. Delays from plumbers or electricians push your work into evenings and weekends, blowing your own schedule through no fault of your own.

Problem 4: Training Takes Years, Trust Takes Longer Skilled carpenters take real time to develop, and finding someone you'd trust with finish work that carries your name is genuinely rare.

Joe's Take:  I've seen too many brilliant carpenters underpaid for brilliant work, sorting the pricing is usually the fastest route to the money the skill already deserves.

FAQ 1 Q: How much should a carpenter charge per day in Ireland? A: Enough to cover the detail work a "simple" job usually turns into — pricing needs to account for finish quality, not just square footage.

FAQ 2 Q: How do I stop snagging dragging out for weeks after a job? A: Build it into the original price and timeline rather than treating it as free extra work at the end.

FAQ 3 Q: How do I price bespoke carpentry without under-quoting? A: A repeatable process beats a gut feeling — the same disciplined method on every quote, regardless of how unique the job looks.

FAQ 4 Q: What's the best way to manage delays caused by other trades? A: Build buffer into your own schedule and communicate it clearly upfront, rather than absorbing every delay silently.
