Retrofit Work Is Booming. Are You Pricing It Right?

SEAI grant work is some of the best opportunity in the trades right now, but it's also work most tradesmen have never had to price before, with paperwork and payment timing that catches people out fast.

Problem 1: Grant Paperwork Is a New Skill, Not an Afterthought. SEAI applications, BER requirements, and compliance steps add real admin time that needs to be priced in, not absorbed as a favour to the client.

Problem 2: The Cash Flow Gap While Grant Payment Processes. The job's done and materials are paid for, but the grant portion of payment can take time to land, a gap that needs planning for, not discovering mid-job.

Problem 3: This Is a Genuinely New Type of Pricing. Heat pumps and retrofit work don't fit neatly into old habits built around boiler swaps and repairs, old pricing instincts can badly under-quote new work.

Problem 4: Staff Need Training You Might Not Have Budgeted For. Retrofit work often needs specific training most existing staff haven't had yet, a real cost to plan for before taking the work on, not after.

Joe's Take: Retrofit is one of the best opportunities in the trades right now, and most tradesmen are still pricing it like old work, getting that right early is a real edge.

FAQ 1 Q: How do I price SEAI grant-assisted heating work? A: Price the full job including admin and compliance time, not just materials and install,  the paperwork is real, billable work.

FAQ 2 Q: How do I manage cash flow while waiting on grant payments? A: Plan the payment timeline into the job from the start, rather than treating the gap as a surprise.

FAQ 3 Q: What extra paperwork does retrofit work involve compared to standard heating jobs? A: More than most tradesmen expect for the first time: applications, BER assessments, and compliance documentation are part of the job now.

FAQ 4 Q: Do my staff need extra training for heat pump and retrofit installations? A: Likely yes, budget for it as part of taking on this type of work, not as an unexpected cost later.
