Is your mindset pushing you forward or pulling you back?

Updated: May 14, 2021

(LINK TO YOUTUBE VIDEO AT BOTTOM OF PAGE)

Most days when I’m out and about, I see people on their way to their jobs that they probably hate, just to survive and pay the bills. You can see it on their faces. This is heartbreaking to see, and unfortunately it’s very common. I call this the treadmill of life.

As business owners and self employed tradesmen we have to realise that we can achieve so much more. If we are not where we want to be in life, it’s easy to fall into the victim mindset and blame everyone else but ourself.

I see it all the time, lads having a tough time in their business and blaming the government, the economy, and whatever else they can think of for their current circumstances.

We can achieve so much more if we play the game to win. If you’re in business, be in business to win, and build the best business you can, and go above and beyond to serve your

customers. All of my content is aimed at small business owners and lads in the building game, but even if you don’t have a business, or are a stay at-home parent, strive to be the best parent you can. If you’re in a relationship, be the best partner you can. Don’t just settle for average or be happy just to take part.

Let's say you want to take your business to the next level. You simply have to ‘go all in’, really push yourself forward, and be prepared to do the things that your competitors are not. Be prepared to do the things that the old you thought was too much to do.

If I make a decision to do something, i’m doing it one way or other. I’m not going to do it providing the conditions allow me to do it. I’m doing it either way. Commitment is a very strong thing when you bring it in to your life. When you commit to getting a result in your business, commit to the result regardless of what life throws at you.

As Grant Cardone says you can either be obsessed or be average. And lets be honest who

the f u c k wants to aim for average.

Make a commitment to take things to the next level, and stick to it, no matter what. Is it going to be easy? No, nothing worthwhile in life ever is, but if you are focussed, determined and keep pushing forward with the correct mindset, you will succeed.

As Uncle G says, “Success is your Duty, Obligation and Responsibility,” and this is a motto I have taken in to my life and by god is it paying off.

Just ask yourself, “Is my mindset pushing me forward or pulling me back?” Be honest with yourself.

You either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

Signs of a fixed mindset include avoiding challenges, giving up easily, viewing effort as pointless, ignoring constructive criticism and feeling threatened by the success of others.

Signs of a growth mindset include embracing challenges, persisting in the face of setbacks, viewing effort as the path to mastery, learning from criticism and being inspired by the success of others.

You absolutely need a growth mindset to succeed in life and business, and It’s very important to be careful about the information that you absorb, and the people you surround yourself with, as these can stand in the way of your success.

I work with lads all the time who are going out on their own in business and a couple of times over the last while I got a worrying answer to the following question - What are you going to do if your business doesn’t work out ?

The few times that lads told me their old boss said he would take them back if their business didn't work out I was deeply worried. You cannot start a business with the attitude of going back to where you were if it doesn’t work out.

If this is the case you will pack it in at the slightest bit of inconvenience. You need to not entertain any notion of the business not working out when you are starting off. Do not for 1 minute allow yourself to think it will be ok to go back to your old employer if things don’t work out. Do away with the safety net and you will be a different operator altogether.

So what mindset do you have and why should you listen to me?

I’ve had more ups and downs than most over the years, but I’ve developed a growth mindset and it has had an incredible impact on my business. I grew my property portfolio by 50% in 3 years by adopting this mindset. We’ve also been involved in various other deals, which have brought in a few quid over the last 3 years. And we’re hitting profits of €1mil per year and I’m just getting started. This is not a boast in any way, its purely a fact but I would not be able to do this if I didnt get my head in the game and adopt the correct mindset. I just want you to realise what’s possible too with the correct mindset. I’m very excited to see where I will be in 3 more years and I hope you are too.

So what can I do, Joe?

Here are some examples:

Tomorrow morning on the way to work, instead of listening to the news on the radio talking about the pandemic and all the doom and gloom, listen to a business audio book or a podcast, to see if there’s anything that you can use to grow your business. Tune in to my TRADESMANS SURVIVAL GUIDE podcast

Or after work tomorrow, instead of putting your feet up and watching Netflix, jump onto social media and reply to any customer comments left on your business page, or reply to any customer emails that you may have. Take a small step to improve your business and commit to doing it every day until it becomes a habit.

If you are not willing to do little things like this that might grow your business, you don’t want success badly enough.

Remember……. Success starts with the correct mindset above all else.
